Prof. Bharat Bhushan co-chaired First Nature-Inspired Engineering Conference held in Cetraro, Calabria, Italy on Sept 8-13, 2019
Professor Bharat Bhushan and Professor Marc-Oliver Coppens co-chaired the first Conference on Nature-Inspired Engineering. Prof. Coppens is Ramsay Memorial Professor, Director Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering, and Head of Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London (UCL), UK. The conference was sponsored by Engineering Conferences International (ECI), which is a not-for-profit organization that provides opportunities for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers and scientists from many disciplines. Professor Bhushan’s scientific contributions in the area of functional materials and his experience in conference organization made him an ideal candidate to serve as co-chair for this inaugural conference. He is an innovative researcher who searches for nature-inspired solutions for engineering problems using a cross-disciplinary approach to science and technology.
The conference focused on the following application areas:
- Scalable Manufacturing & Process Intensification
- Built Environment: Construction, Architecture & Urban Design
- Functional Materials
- Biomedical & Healthcare Engineering
- Energy & Environmental Technology
- Robotics and Other Applications
In addition to organizing the conference, he was the Keynote speaker in one of the major conference focus areas, that of Functional Materials. In his presentation, “Bioinspired mechanically durable self-healing superliquiphilic/phobic surfaces,” he discussed recent experimental results from his lab (Nanoprobe Lab for Bio- & Nanotechnology and Biomimetics (NLB2). His presentation was very well received and demonstrated his creative approach to problem solving.
The accommodations at the Grand Hotel San Michele in Calbria, Italy were both beautiful and comfortable. Top scientists from around the globe participated in discussions and shared in the collegial atmosphere to exchange information and to, hopefully, foster new collaborations in the search for advanced technological solutions to problems in the engineering sciences.
